A History of Innovation in Surveying
Nathan Weber, PLS, the President of Diamond Land Surveying, has a knack for identifying technologies that make surveying more accurate, efficient and that open up new possibilities for day-to-day application in the surveying world.
It all began in the rural town of Vernal, Utah. As a high school student he worked as a crew hand during the summer and a draftsman during the winter. Being an adept learner, he quickly mastered the trade and was assigned to run a crew at the young age of 17. Over the following years he progressively improved as a surveyor and draftsman. Following his passion led him to the Wasatch Front for greater surveying opportunities. His early career was filled with roadway projects – the reconstruction of I-15 and major alterations to I-80 and SR201. His skills were noticed early and at the age of 21 he was hired as the survey auditor for the entire project I-15 reconstruction, including the responsibility to monitor 13 full time survey crews on the freeway reconstruction.
After working at larger local engineering firms Nathan followed his entrepreneurial spirit and joined Diamond Design and Land Surveying in 2000, a smaller Utah firm. This ultimately led to his acquisition of the company, which later became Diamond Land Surveying. The firm’s early focus was on developing applications of 3D laser scanning to surveying. Diamond was among the earliest adopters of laser scanning in surveying in the western United States and quickly became the market expert in Utah. Since that time Diamond has become the leader in applying 3D laser scanning in a variety of surveying applications.
But 3D laser scanning is only part of the story. Innovation and new applications have followed Diamond in each traditional aspect of surveying. This is demonstrated in the Civil + Structural Engineer digest published in 2009, featuring Diamond’s work on monitoring cranes at Chevron’s Salt Lake City refinery.
But the story continues… Diamond has become recognized as a Utah leader in land surveying. It’s easy to make that kind of statement on a website, but the proof is in the client base. Diamond has a growing list of long-term repeat clients, including Utah’s largest land owners, leading contractors and professional firms. Diamond continues to pursue it’s long term goal of becoming the “go to” surveying and laser scanning firm in the state of Utah and surrounding region.
